January 2010

News at the Market:  The market is closed right now.  It will be opened again the first Saturday in April, but I will continue to write the news letter, letting you know what we are doing in the field, and what to plant for the month.  Also we have our annual farmers meeting in February.  I will pass on to you any thing new that is of interest to the customers of the market.

Out in the field:  Since the weather has turned so cold, we are busy covering all of our water spickets, closing all of the vents under the house, and most important covering up vulnerable plants.  Some of these plants of ours are: Young figs, bay tree, oranges, rosemary, lemon grass and if you still want some greens through the winter, throw a row cover over them.  When you uncover them to get some succulent greens there might be a cat or rabbit hiding under there keeping warm.

With the weather so cold we can’t do any planting right now, but if the weather  starts warming up you can plant some onions, cabbages, and lettuce or some trees, and shrubs.   I think we will wait for February to plant these things as it looks like it is going to be colder than normal this month.  Then we will plant onions, cabbages, lettuce, potatoes, beets, turnips, and mustard.

While it is cold outside, we will still be busy starting seedlings.  We will start collards, broccoli, cabbage , herbs and some times some flowers.  We start them in our root cellar, then move them out to the cold frames, or green house.

Thanks,

Alice Parker
