February 2010

News at the Market:  As far as we know right now, the city of Tuscaloosa has stated that we will probably be at our present location for the next year.  They are behind in the construction of the amphitheater and until it is finished, we will still have use of this site.  This might change but I think we will be able to notify our customers in plenty of time.

Out in the field
:  In prior  years, we would have had our potatoes, english peas, onions, cabbage, collards, and greens planted already, but with the weather so cold, and wet, we are just waiting for a break in the weather.  We have everything ready to go, and when the sun comes out and dries and warms the soil, we will be out there from sun up to dark, putting seed and plants into the ground.  We are using this time to start our seedlings in flats, which we will then put in cold frames, and greenhouses, to get a head start on the season.  I already have my collard, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, and chard in cold frames.  I am now getting my herbs ready to go, and a little later in the month I will start my first tomatoes.  It usually takes 6 weeks from  starting the seeds in flats, to plant in the field.

Now is the time to be planting new trees, and pruning the older trees. If you have any cold damage to your trees, the best thing is to wait to prune until  you can tell how far back to cut.

While the weather has been so cold, some of the farmers have been reading the catalogs of farm machinery.  They have bought new tractors, and 2 farmers that I know of have bought trans planters.  These planters plant little plants, like tomatoes, collards, broccoli, cabbage, and even plants potatoes.  They can plant a whole field of  vegetables in no time at all. Amazing.  That is about all the new here for this month.

Thanks,

Alice Parker
