APRIL
News at the Market: The big news is the State Board of Health approved the amendment to let the farmers sell certain foods at the farmers market. These foods include baked breads, rolls, cookies, cakes, brownies, fudge, and double-crust fruit pies; traditional fruit jams, jellies, marmalades and relishes, candy, spices or herbs, and peanut brittle. These foods may be sold at farmers markets with appropriate labeling. The effective date is April 23, 2009. This is really good news for us, however we are still waiting for them to present that bill which will allow us to sell the soups, canned string beans, and tomatoes. I won’t hold my breath for that to happen. We are opening the market on April 18, 2009 and I hope to see you there to see what we have.
Check out our produce list for spring, and see if there is anything that you might want. Some of the fruits and vegetables aren’t in yet, but the further along we go, the more we will have, and the more sellers that we will have.
Out in the Field: The last couple of weeks the weather has turned real nice, which has allowed us to get some planting done. Slowly but surely we are filling up our garden space. The corn, string beans, and squash are in the ground, along with the herbs that I have transplanted from the green house.
Some of the farmers I know, set out their early tomatoes in March. The rule of thumb is the last frost date for this area is April 10th, but remember the old timers say that if it thunders in February, it will frost in April. It thundered the 18th and the 27th of February, so if you want to take a chance, set you out some tomatoes. Usually this is not a killing frost and you can just wash them off with the hose, before the sun comes up and they will be okay. At this time you can plant any other vegetable you want.
Thanks,
Alice Parker
