MAY
News at The Market: Starting in May, we will be open on Tuesday and Saturday, 6 A.M. until noon. We really had a good turn out the 25th for the first day the canned and baked goods were back on our tables. We were ready for the customers with Libby’s pickles and peach preserves, Sue’s jams, jellies, and her famous tea cakes, Smoky’s dill pickles, Alice’s jellies, pickles, and fig bread, and Jimmy’s fried pies. We really enjoy seeing all our old customers back for another season. In May we will have cabbage, turnip greens, English peas, broccoli and lettuce, (with the hot weather we will have a short season of this), onions, beets, collards, and new potatoes.
Out In The Field: The farmers are still planting, going now for the hot weather vegetables, such as peas, watermelon, okra, sweet potatoes. While they are waiting for them to come up, they are staking tomatoes, putting up poles for the string beans. They are also cultivating all the other vegetables that they have growing, plus hoeing weeds, and hoeing weeds, and hoeing weeds. After cleaning out the weeds, the fortunate farmers that can, turn around and irrigate. Then start weeding all over again.
It looks like we are going to have a good crop of blue berries, peaches, and plums. If you are a member of face book, we’ll let you know when the different fruits and vegetables start coming in. Further along in the season we will be putting on some special events at the market, so keep up with what is happening at the market. Come down and see what we have, as every week we have something new coming in.
Thanks,
Alice Parker
