JUNE
News at the Market: Things are starting to jump at the market. Along with the spring crops of broccoli, collards, cabbage, onions, beets, lettuce, and greens, we have squash, egg plant, cucumbers, string beans, even had some corn Saturday, and a few tomatoes are trickling in. In the fruit, we have a few apples, plums, and blueberries. Oh, I forgot, flowers are in. Sue’s glads, and Mr. Webb’s sunflowers, and Mr. Pearson’s live plants. Keep check through face book to be current on what new vegetable or fruit is coming in. From now until fall there will be new and different things coming in.
The market will be opening on Thursday afternoons starting July 2., and it will be open on Saturday morning on July 4th.
Out in the Field: The farmers are really going strong now. Starting with picking, washing, sorting, and loading on Monday, and Friday to get ready for market day. To keep the veggies coming in they are still planting. When one crop goes out they plow, or disk and plant something else. They are busy digging their onions, and potatoes because the tops have died back and it is time to get them out of the ground. We have all the garlic dug and hung in the sheds to dry. The same goes for the onions, although we don’t hang them we put them on a frame covered with a wire mesh. We will dig the potatoes and store them in a root cellar. Then where these crops were, we will plant peas, more squash, butter beans and maybe some water melon.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
For every Saturday in July we will have something special going on. On July 11, will be Produce Day, with prizes, and drawings for free vegetables. On July 18th, we will have TOMATO TASTING. On July 25th , will be Watermelon tasting. Be sure to keep up with what is happening for the week on face book.
Thanks,
Alice Parker
