News at the Market: The broccoli and the cabbage are in. Unfortunately the tomatoes are getting scarce, but until we have a frost we will still have a farmer or two who will be picking a few right along. We still have fresh summer squash, cucumbers, peppers, egg plants, okra, peas, and winter squash, although when that frost comes in, it will get a lot of these vegetables. We will still have lots of collards, turnips, onions, pak choi, lettuce, and the root crops that will be getting ready soon. We also have a few oranges getting ripe. There is no comparison to the taste of fresh fruit and vegetables from the market.

Out in the Field: If you are in the habit of collecting your flower seed from your garden, now is the time to do this. Remember to label, and date it and store in the refrigerator. Most seeds likes to be stored dry and cool. It is time to plant spring flowering "wildflower" seed such as larkspur, corn flower, black-eyed Susan. Fall is also the time to plant spring flowering bulbs. Plant them in clumps of 5 to 10 for the best show. In the south it's important not to plant them too deep. Just cover them with a couple of inches of soil. Less for smaller bulbs. (This information came from "Petals from the Past"). From November 1, or after the trees have lost their leaves, is a good time to plant fruit trees, or any other kind of tree. It gives the trees a chance to get established before the hot summer sun. Get ready to bring in your potted plants that can't take the cold.

UP COMING EVENTS: Saturday, November 8, to kick off our Christmas season, we will have an APPRICIATION DAY for our customers. Free hot drinks, soft drinks, donuts, and cookies. We will have wreaths and Christmas greenery. We will be glad to take orders for Christmas trees, or any other kind of decorations. We make holly, cedar, pine and boxwood wreaths, plus garlands. Be sure to stop by the market and see what we have.

With Thanksgiving coming up I have a recipe for you to try to go with your turkey.

SQUASH DRESSING: 2 cups yellow squash, cooked 2 cups corn bread crumbs, 1 can cream of chicken soup, ½ cup onion, 3 large eggs, hard boiled, ½ cup margarine, melted, Sage to taste, salt and pepper. Delicious.

I would be interested in knowing if my newsletter is helping any of our readers in their endeavor to do a little farming. Feel free to leave me a note if there is something you would like to ask, or a comment on what I have written.
