NEWSLETTER
December
News at the Market. Well that frost that I was telling you about in the last newsletter has come and put an end to the squash, cucumbers, egg plant, okra, peas, and tomatoes. We still have broccoli, cabbage, collards, turnip greens, onions, pak choi, lettuce, and the root crops like turnip roots, rutabagas, and beets. Guess what. We have peanuts and pecans this year, but they are going fast. Now is a good time to come and get your traditional holiday greens, plus get some ideas for decorating your home.
This is the time when the farmers get into the Christmas spirit, and get creative. The Saturday after Thanksgiving we will start our Christmas season with Holly, cedar, boxwood, pine, and rosemary wreaths. We make them all sizes with all kinds of ribbons to go with them. We make swags, garlands, and have all kinds of loose greenery to go with any kind of decorating that you might want to do. We also take orders for Christmas trees.
Out in the Field. Start cleaning up your garden. Chop and compost dead plants. Think about draining your garden hoses and winterizing your irrigation pipes so they won't freeze and break.
If you haven't planted your garlic for next year now is the time to do this. Any plants that can't take cold weather, be sure to have a cover to protect them from the cold.
Up coming News: The last day the market will be open is December 20, 2008, but I will still be sending out the monthly newsletters. I will keep you informed of what the farmers are doing in the field during the winter months, and of course when we will be opening up again next spring.
